Welcome To McClintock's First Book in Latin!

McClintock's First Book In Latin  is an online course in classical Latin, based on the eighth edition of John McClintock and George Crooks', 'First Book in Latin', a classic Latin grammar first published in 1859 and used widely in schools throughout the United States.  We've taken this famous Latin grammar text and added our breakthrough translation verification technology to generate drill exercises, provide context sensitive help, monitor vocabulary acquisition, and most importantly, to automatically correct student translations!   The combination of an extremely rigorous and time-tested Latin grammar and advanced translation technology produces a unique and powerful tool for learning Latin.    McClintock's Latin is ideally suited for students who want to learn Latin on their own, but is also very effective as a supplement to a class-based course in Latin.

Our Approach

Students learn Classical Latin by translating sentences between Latin and English and the more translations, the better. We've spent two years developing translation verification technology to automatically verify student translations of Latin or English sentences.  Our translation verifier will automatically identify any syntax or translation errors and provide context sensitive help to allow the student to quickly diagnose and understand what they've done wrong.  Our course contains over 1000 Latin sentences to translate to English, and over 1000 English sentence to translate to Latin, all automatically corrected!  At the end of each lesson the student's performance is evaluated and recorded.

The McClintock Advantage

Most modern Latin text books are focused on getting students to read real classical Latin as soon as possible. While this is certainly a laudable goal, it is often achieved at the expense of a thorough grounding in the basics, leaving students frustrated as they attempt to read classical authors without having really mastered basic morphology, grammar and without having acquired sufficient vocabulary.  McClintock's grammar, by contrast, is focused on providing the student with a thorough grounding in the basics. It is, as the title suggests, a 'First' book in Latin, though it easily covers as much material as the leading modern texts. Through 'constant imitation and repetition' the student is led to a thorough mastery of the basics and is well prepared to tackle classical authors.  In addition, McClintock's grammar gives an equal emphasis to Latin-to-English translations, which are indispensable to a mastery of the language.  Many modern courses on Latin no longer require the student to translate to Latin, but content themselves with teaching the student to read (or sometimes just muddle through) Latin.  We're confident that once you've worked through a few Latin-to-English translation exercises, you'll agree that there is no better way to master the language.
